Calcium carbonate is a chemical compound with the chemical formula Ca C O3. It is a common substance found in rock in all parts of the world, and is the main component of shells of marine organisms, snails, pearls, and eggshells. Calcium carbonate is the active ingredient in agricultural lime, and is usually the principal cause of hard water. It is commonly used medicinally as a calcium supplement or as an antacid, but excessive consumption can be hazardous. From Wikipedia under the

Q. The only info I can find explains that it neutralizes stomach acid. How does calcium carbonate work at the cellular level in the stomach? How does it neutralize acid? Asked by Kale'a - Fri Apr 17 22:45:09 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. The carbonate, CO3, reacts with the acid ions (H+) to produce water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2). I'm not aware of any direct effect on the cells. As far as I know carbonate just neutralizes the stomach acid the cells have already produced. Answered by PaulCyp - Fri Apr 17 23:10:41 2009 what is the science behind calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid? Q. i did an experiment where you put the calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid together and trap the gas that it forms in a cylinder that has water in it. As the gas got traped in the cylinder the water came out. what is the science behind this? Asked by S - Sun May 9 09:44:00 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. calcium carbonate added to HCl reacts to form carbon dioxide and calcium chloride. the CO2 is released as a gas. the CO2 reaction product causes an increase in the internal pressure of the container, which is greater than the pressure of the surrounding atmosphere. this presses on the water in the trap, forcing it out of the container because the air outside of the container is displaced. note that if the container was sealed, it would eventually explode as the pressure became higher than it's tensile strength. Answered by mike H - Sun May 9 10:00:07 2010 Is it safe to use water w/ calcium carbonate in a netti pot?
Q. I live in France, and regular tap water contains moderate amounts of calcium carbonate, which is supposedly good for you, but I'm worried about using it in my netti pot. Does anyone know if it's ok to use with a nasal wash? thanks for your response... I'm not sure it's a negligible amount in France. There's much more in the tap water here than I've ever seen in the U.S. When I boil water there's always a white film on it and lots of white crusty calcium carbonate on the sides of the pot... not sure if it's a good idea to put all that up my nose, but I don't know... maybe that much isn't harmful. Asked by free23 - Sun Feb 1 08:06:39 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. The negligible amount of calicium in your netti pot shouldn't be a problem. A lot of people use tap water. Just remember to add the salt. Answered by Danielle D - Sun Feb 1 08:21:35 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Calcium carbonate" |
