Do clocks/watches operate on magnets?
Q. Do clocks and watches emit a magnetic field? I realize that a magnetic force could DISRUPT the operation of a clock, but I'm wondering if it itself emits one. In other words, should clocks and watches be kept away from hard drives and other items that are sensitive to magnetic fields?
Asked by rhino_rngr - Thu Oct 30 21:17:17 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There are many different kinds of clock mechanisms. If they have a battery, they have some sort of magnets, usually a stepping motor. But these are very small and emit a small magnetic field. I doubt they would have any effect on a hard drive, since it is enclosed in a metal cover that acts as a partial shield. Don't forget any wire carrying current generates a magnetic field, including the wires inside the PC. And don't forget the hard drive itself has several motors with magnets. .

Why don't modern clocks and watches work by clockwork.?
Q. Clockwork was originally carbon friendly, didn't need batteries or plugs, it seems to me that technology has gone backwards.
Asked by DoctressWho - Sat Aug 18 17:34:33 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Modern clocks and watches don't use mechanical (clockwork) power sources because they are affected by vibration and temperature thus reducing their accuracy electronics can be stabilised against temperature variations and are unaffected by vibration. in theory it is possible to produce a hybrid timepiece where electrical power is provided by a "clockwork" mechanism but the timekeeping part is electronic thus removing the need for batteries etc, whilst retaining accuracy..

A. Well we'd still have the sun to tell the time, plus I heard somewhere that we have this like inner clock thing in us so if you actually just guessed the time you wouldn't be more than like half an hour off. Don't know if it's true though, I've never tried it.

Why do people always photograph clocks and watches at ten minutes to two?
Q. Joey, Surely 10-10 would be thirds or 2-10
Asked by mns - Mon Mar 19 07:10:39 2007 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. They don't. They photograph them at 10:08. There are two reasons for this. One is to perfectly divide the watch into thirds, making it seem logical and clean like people want a watch to look, and the second is a subliminal message to show that the watch is smiling back at the potential purchaser.

A. Wall clocks without an internal crystal use the phase of the AC current as "clock". If there are problems with the voltage in your house, then the clock will run faster or slower.

Who decided that the advertised position of watches and clocks should be set at 10:10, and why?
Q. when did this start? what does it signify?
Asked by 1972.igniteinc.biz - Dallas - Wed Aug 27 20:01:32 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There is no definitive answer to this question, in that no one knows for sure how it started -- although there are some theories that I've heard for many years: 1. Smile Theory: 10:10 makes the clock look "happy". 2. V Theory: The V formed by the hands brings the eye down to focus on the maker's mark on the face of the clock/watch.

Why in all pictures (ads) of watches and clocks the time shown is 10:10 ?
Q. Whenever I see an advertisement (Banners, posters, hoardings or billboards etc.) the time on shown watch or clock is always 10:10. Can any one answer why?
Asked by Zulfiqar - Sun Aug 16 08:53:53 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Aesthetics. The 10:10 position gives the clock or watch a number of benefits: The hands not overlapping, so they re fully and clearly visible and their styling can be admired. The arrangement of the hands is symmetrical, which people generally find more pleasant than asymmetry, making the product more appealing to customers. The manufacturer s logo, usually in the center of the face under the 12, is not only visible, but nicely framed by the hands. Additional elements on the face (like date windows secondary dials), usually placed near the 3, 6, or 9, won t be obscured. According to the folks at Timex (who set their products at 10:09:36 exactly), the standard setting used to be used to 8:20, but this made the face look like it… [cont.]

A. He was a dealer in London, about 1890 to 1910. The firm was " Walter Jones 195 - 196 Sloane Street, London SW ". Some of his stuff turns up at auctions, now and then. It was not just watches that he dealt with but various art works. See this example.

Why does the advertisement of watches and clocks always show 10.10?
Q. Same thing goes with the ad of other products that displays the time. Either digital or analog it's always show 10.10.
Asked by simplyvie - Mon Mar 10 03:49:05 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Because it's an aesthetically pleasing arrangement for the hands. In other words, it looks nice. Also makes sure to show off all the important parts of the watch/clock, which could include a date window by the 3, the logo (typically above the 6 or below the 12), any writing, and also shows off the hands of the watch. As for digital, just out of habit. Some person was setting a digital for an ad photo when they first came around, and thought "What time should I set it for? Well, I dont see any reason why 10:10 won't work" With digital, it really doesnt matter what time it shows, so they just carried over the tradition.

A. Aesthetics I personally think that the 10:10 position (sometimes 10:12 or 10:08) was adopted for pictures of clocks and watches because it is symmetric and looks better. Today the symmetric positions are both aesthetic and customary. Other symmetric hand positions are also used, but not as frequently. Examples include 8:20, 8:18, and 2:50. Reviewing some Seth Thomas clock catalog illustrations, I see a gradually increasing symmetry of the hands as the catalogs progress from 1878 to 1940. "We always put hands to 10.10 here and in other collections I'm responsible for. The answer is probably quite simply that it looks better, aesthetically and practically, as the clock has a 'smile' on its face (not just a marketing gimmick, it really does… [cont.]
