Publishing is the process of production and dissemination of literature or information – the activity of making information available for public view. In some cases authors may be their own publishers, meaning: originators and developers of content also provide media to deliver and display the content. Traditionally, the term refers to the distribution of printed works such as books (the "book trade") and newspapers. With the advent of digital information systems and the Internet, the scope of publishing has expanded to include electronic resources, such as the electronic versions of books and periodicals, as well as websites, blogs, video games and the like. Publishing includes: the stages of the development, acquisition, copyediting, graphic design, production – printing (and its electronic equivalents), and marketing and distribution of newspapers, magazines, books, literary works, musical works, software and other works dealing with information, including the electronic media. Publication is also important as a legal concept: (1) as the process of giving formal notice to the world of a significant intention, for example, to marry or enter bankruptcy; (2) as the essential precondition of being able to claim defamation; that is, the alleged libel must have been published, and (3) for copyright purposes, where there is a difference in the protection of published and unpublished works. Q. Good day. I have begun working on a script for a stage production and I wish to know how I would go about looking for publication without an agent. Where do I find a publisher? What are the common guidelines for publishers? What can I do to ensure that my work is accepted? How does the publication process undergo and how long does it usually take? For the information, I live in the state of West Virginia, Charleston area. Any help is appreciated. Asked by Kir - Tue Mar 3 08:38:09 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I don't have all of the answers, but I did talk to a playwright friend of mine who gets his work done all over the country. The first thing you'll want to do is get your script officially copyrighted through The Library of Congress. It doesn't cost much to do, but it may take a few months for it to go through. One thing my friend told me, that made me reconsider whether I wanted to seek publishing my play is that not only does the publishing company get a percentage of your royalties (which, really isn't that bad), they now own the rights to your play - so if you ever wanted to put on your own play, you'd have to pay them. Which, may not be all that bad, since you will be getting the majority of it back, but it is something to really… [cont.] Answered by muchadoaboutnothing - Tue Mar 3 08:57:28 2009 What is the best method of finding a publisher for written work? Q. There are so many 'Do it yourself' sites out there that allow you to self-publish... but what about submitting your work for review to a publisher in the hopes that they will like it and 'sponsor' you? How do you find out who these publishers are? Asked by MistyRose80 - Fri Sep 29 14:22:20 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. The right publisher, or type of publishing option, will depend upon several things. First, why do you want to publish your work? Next, what skills, interests, time, and money do you have to invest? Last, evaluate your manuscript, its best audience, and the likely market potential. Some books are simply not "commercial." If you want the ms in book form for a small audience, at lowest expense, try a subsidy press (aka POD publisher) like Lulu, Booksurge, Booklocker, etc. Some people are charismatic dynamos, with far-flung networks, and money and business management skills glowing from every pore. They will probably enjoy publishing. While even they aren't going to get rich from this business, they may have so much fun, that they won't… [cont.] Answered by Marion Gropen - Fri Sep 29 15:25:38 2006 How do I add a file download to a website made using Publisher?
