Publishing is the process of production and dissemination of literature or information – the activity of making information available for public view. In some cases authors may be their own publishers, meaning: originators and developers of content also provide media to deliver and display the content. Traditionally, the term refers to the distribution of printed works such as books (the "book trade") and newspapers. With the advent of digital information systems and the Internet, the scope of publishing has expanded to include electronic resources, such as the electronic versions of books and periodicals, as well as micropublishing, websites, blogs, video games and the like. Publishing includes: the stages of the development, acquisition, copyediting, graphic design, production – printing (and its electronic equivalents), and marketing and distribution of newspapers, magazines, books, literary works, musical works, software and other works dealing with information, including the electronic media. Publication is also important as a legal concept: (1) as the process of giving formal notice to the world of a significant intention, for example, to marry or enter bankruptcy; (2) as the essential precondition of being able to claim defamation; that is, the alleged libel must have been published, and (3) for copyright purposes, where there is a difference in the protection of published and unpublished works. The best place for beginners to start looking for a publisher is "Writer's Market" - a list of publishers and their submission guidelines. Always double check the source, though, to make sure the place still exists and that those are the correct guidelines. Most libraries have a copy. This is a cut and paste from another question I answered, but I think it might be what you are looking for. First you need to finish the book. Also, publishers look for people who already have a successful writing background, so you may want to establish a freelance writing resume by publishing some non-fiction articles in major publications. Then you'll need an agent. Q. I am looking to start my own publishing company. I don't want to use a self-publisher such as Xulon, as I want to start my own; books, cd's, and dvd's. No ebooks at all! Asked by Matt D - Wed Mar 21 11:42:12 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. My answer is based on many years experience as an entrepreneur. Years ago, I had an idea for a book, and was turned down by 17 publishers. I self-published the book, did VERY well with it, and that launched my career in publishing. So, this advice comes from someone who had been there. First of all, remember this: You can't be all things to all people. While your goal of publishing books, CD's and DVD's is admirable, as a start-up, you need to focus on one of those. If you try to do all three to start, you very likely won't succeed at any of them. So, here are the steps I would recommend you follow: 1. Choose your focus. 2. Pick something for your first project, whether it's a book, CD or DVD.
