A. Shakespeare followed in the tradition of other Renaissance writers in that he wrote in the vernacular, or native tongue of his country. As the Middle Ages waned and were eclipsed by the Renaissance, the trend begun by Dante in the 14th century was that books and writings were done not in Latin but in Italian, Spanish, French, English etc. The Printing Press helped fuel this nativism, and the rise of native writing helped fuel the literacy rise in Europe. Movements like the Renaissance and later the Reformation were greatly aided by this change. Shakespeare made the idea of writing in English an acceptable thing. If Shakespeare and others did not write in their native tongues, the idea of nationalism and the rise of nation-states, as well… [cont.]
