What book has changed your life the most? How did it affect your way of life and your perspectives?
Q. Many people claim that books have changed their lives. For you, what was the book that you fully read and understood and noticed that it had an effect on your life? What book made you want to change for the better? What book made you realize the meaning of life? What book changed you as a whole?

A. I don't think there is a master narrative that told me how and why to live. However, books seem to help me on my way wherever I go. For instance, Rebbeca by Daphne DuMaurier made me love the classics. Sula by Toni Morrison made me appreciate my mother. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen made me understand my father. A love for the Harry Potter series gave me something in common with my sister. My husband initiated our first conversation with me at a cafe because I was reading The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, and he had enjoyed the book previously. However, if you want a book that will change your life without any outside factors, Siddhartha is a good one. Herman Hesse also wrote a book called Demian that I think is… [cont.]

A. Get a copy of "The New Breed" by Gary Chester and make that book your bible. It uses a revolutionary system that will elevate your playing to the next level. You should be able to find this book at any music store or online at amazon.com or musiciansfriend.com At first, this book seems to have little practical use, but it will build your independence, reading, grooving, timekeeping and concentration skills like no other book on the market. Get this book before anything else, but I have a couple of other books you may want to check out. "Future Sounds" by David Garibaldi. This book is a method for playing linear funk in styles of Tower of Power and some Herbie Hancock songs. Of you have no interest in funk music, then pass this one… [cont.]

Q. I have the writing and editing down, but I do not know what to do next. I am not interested in self publishing as I would prefer to send to major publishers to see if they will pick the book up...but there are things I am really in the dark about...such as getting an agent, protecting the content of my book, etc. Is there a good book out there I can buy that goes into these details? Thanks.

A. Writer's Market is definitely a good place to start as far as hard copy info goes. I would also recommend that you read the links in the About Me section of my profile as well as My Starred Questions. Two of my favorite blogs are Nathan Bransford of Curtis Brown, Ltd and BookEnds, LLC. Blogs are especially helpful I think because agents, editors and publishers write exactly what they think and how they feel about the industry. You really get a feel for what the right and wrong moves are. Read ALL of the links and you will gain the knowledge that you need before you start trying to publish your book.

I need help finding a book on how to survive and snake/bird species identification?
Q. I'm a survival enthusiast and i love nature. I'm going to see if i can survive without any help or supplies, like food in the mountains of kentucky. I want a survival book to help me out and i just want the identification books for fun. It'd be nice to have as accurate a book as possible, i mean for the location, because obviously a desert survival book won't help much.

What was the book where the clue was hidden in the back of a famous statue in Europe?
Q. Someone wrote in Reader's Digest that they read this intriguing book (maybe about spies) where the big clue was a note hidden in the neck of a famous statue. This person actually visited the statue and reached behind it and found a note which read "good book, wasn't it". I always wanted to know the name of that book and the name of the statue too.

Q. I have recently become a wildlife major at Humboldt State University, and I am taking the first required class of that major: Introduction to Wildlife Conservation & Administration. So far, the class has been little more than a jumbled series of dates and their corresponding policies. This stuff, while perhaps important, is disappointingly uninspiring as a first experience of this subject to which I intend to dedicate much of my life. I am hoping that people can recommend to me books that I could supplement my education with that will provide me with further appreciation and insight into the subject. What book should I get my 18 year old girlfriend for our 2 year anniversary?
Q. The only requirement is that it can't deal with vampires. I'm looking for my 18 year old girlfriend for our 2 year anniversary, and I don't read a lot of books myself... I know she's not into Twilight/True Blood/etc., (no offense, but thankfully...) and she really likes Meg Cabot, and kind of teen smut novels. What would be a good book that falls under similar authors or categories, or what would be another good suggestion? Thanks in advance!
Asked by What Should I Get Her? - Wed Sep 30 14:43:59 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If she's into Meg Cabot books, she'll probably enjoy the Georgia Nicolson series by Louise Rennison. The first book is entitled "Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging". The main character, Georgia, is a very witty, feisty young girl who's got a lot of spunk and sarcasm in her, quite similar to Meg Cabot's heroines. Also, I'd say the books are well-written and fun to read. Hope this helps!

When submitting a book to a publisher, what stops the publisher from stealing the book?
Q. When submitting a book to a publisher, what stops the publisher from publishing the book under the name of one of their directors and effectively "stealing" your work? I know there is probably some copyright law, but how is it enforced?
Asked by qafaqw - Sun Feb 15 04:31:21 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you deal with reputable publishers, they do NOT steal work. Their career and the company would be ruined. The court settlement would be worth far more to the original author than it would ever have earned the thief. Your work has copyright protection as soon as it is written down. You do not need to register the copyright until there is a need to do so (normally when getting published, and a reputable publisher does this for you). If your work were to be stolen, you have an allowable period of time to then register the work in order to pursue legal action. As for mailing a copy to yourself (known as a poor man's copyright), that is a MYTH. It does NOT register a copyright. It does NOT give you any legal protection. It does… [cont.]

I am looking for a specific book of illustrations?
Q. I can't recall the name, but the illustrations are quite surreal. One page is of a man holding up a chair, ready to hit a lump in his carpet. Another is of a house blasting off like a space shuttle. Another is of a woman getting ready to carve a glowing pumpkin. Apparently, this book is just a collection of illustrations with no real text other than the captions for the pictures because the author never returned to the publishing house to deliver the manuscript and they were just published as a picutre book. I would like to use this book for an assignment for my students, but can't remember the name of it. If anybody knows which book I am referring to please answer this question.

A. I just knew that someone would say to read the manual. And that is great advice. You should definitely read it-about twenty times and then it might start to make sense. Trust me, I understand. When I got my first SLR, the manual didn't make any sense to me. It tells you how to adjust the settings, but gives you no reasoning for what settings you should use and when to use them. I bought a cheap book about photography and when I started to understand what the aperture and shutter speeds are, what they do, and how they work together, the manual that came with the camera finally started making sense. A. Go to amazon.com and select the book category. Then enter the name of the author or one of his works, and all the other information you want will appear. There are also reader comments you will find interesting, and sometimes a blog by the author in question. Dean Koontz, for example, has an extensive blog on amazon and even communicates with his fans by this medium. I think this approach will solve your problem.
