What's a good book to write a compare and contrast essay on?
Q. I need two books to read and to later write a compare and contrast essay on. I already chose my first book which is Oliver Twist and I need help choosing a second book. The second book has to be of a different author and has to be written from the Ancient Times to the Nineteenth Century. I would like a book that can be easily compared and contrasted to Oliver Twist. Thanks.

A. Tom Sawyer would be a good book to do that on. I read it recently and am thinking it could work. It takes place in the 1800's, so there is a good comparison right there. Good luck!

What is the best book that helps for getitng a your own book published?
Q. I have the writing and editing down, but I do not know what to do next. I am not interested in self publishing as I would prefer to send to major publishers to see if they will pick the book up...but there are things I am really in the dark about...such as getting an agent, protecting the content of my book, etc. Is there a good book out there I can buy that goes into these details? Thanks.

A. Writer's Market is definitely a good place to start as far as hard copy info goes. I would also recommend that you read the links in the About Me section of my profile as well as My Starred Questions. Two of my favorite blogs are Nathan Bransford of Curtis Brown, Ltd and BookEnds, LLC. Blogs are especially helpful I think because agents, editors and publishers write exactly what they think and how they feel about the industry. You really get a feel for what the right and wrong moves are. Read ALL of the links and you will gain the knowledge that you need before you start trying to publish your book.

A. People of the Lie: The Hope for Healing Human Evil For those who lived in a family of craziness. For those who never had a solid foundation in understanding right and wrong, good and bad. This book will help you make that distinctiion. It will reveal the evil you may display and the evil others display. Evil that appears to be good confuses people. This book will clear that confusion.

A. Been a while since I read that particular book, but I remember really enjoying the chapter with Lavinia Nebbs and the murderer, The Lonely One. Very suspenseful. Also, I really recommend that you really work to appreciate the quality of the writing as you read. Bradbury wrote some really amazing sentences in that book. I still remember ..."she was cool as mint ice cream..." what a great simile!

A. It helps being famous. If you are famous, you can use your celebrity to get a publishing contract, regardless of the quality of your writing ... Assuming that doesn't apply, unfortunately, the fact that people who you know or who have asked say that they like what you have written is of little real value. It is very hard to get an honest critical opinion from people who value you as a friend or relation, and who might be concerned about upsetting you. If you can get a reader for a publisher to read it, he won't be bothered by that; he will simply be thinking to himself, "Can I sell enough copies of this to get my money back" (or, more realistically, "... to make loads of money"). There are websites through which you can pay to have your… [cont.]

How do I start a book for teens?
Q. Hi, I want to write a book for teens. I read this book, All-America Girl by Meg Cabot and I want it to be somehing like that, a romantic book, but with a small twist. Not a sappy one, a comic funny one when the girl ends up with the person least expected. Can i have suggestions on what to write about? NO deep books. Funny, romantic one would be best. Thanks! Also, a good beginning would be appreciated. I am not copying Meg's book. I want to do something like that! I am using it as inspiration, not as a copy. I like the idea of it and I wish to do something like that, not exactly do it!

A. I would recommend reading as many books as possible in the genres that you like to write, as well as about the craft of writing. When you are reading other fiction books, pay attention to how the authors structure their work. Here are some of my favorites about writing: 1) "Writing Down The Bones" by Natalie Goldberg 2) "Bird by Bird" by Anne Lamott 3) "On Writing Well" by William Zinsser 4) "How to Write Science Fiction & Fantasy" by Orson Scott Card (if those are your genres, of course) 5) "On Writing" by Stephen King 6) "No Plot? No Problem!" by Chris Baty 7) "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves" by Lynne Truss 8) "The Elements of Style" by Strunk and White Also, take a look at a few websites where authors gather. Some of them have very helpful… [cont.]

When submitting a book to a publisher, what stops the publisher from stealing the book?
Q. When submitting a book to a publisher, what stops the publisher from publishing the book under the name of one of their directors and effectively "stealing" your work? I know there is probably some copyright law, but how is it enforced?
Asked by qafaqw - Sun Feb 15 04:31:21 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you deal with reputable publishers, they do NOT steal work. Their career and the company would be ruined. The court settlement would be worth far more to the original author than it would ever have earned the thief. Your work has copyright protection as soon as it is written down. You do not need to register the copyright until there is a need to do so (normally when getting published, and a reputable publisher does this for you). If your work were to be stolen, you have an allowable period of time to then register the work in order to pursue legal action. As for mailing a copy to yourself (known as a poor man's copyright), that is a MYTH. It does NOT register a copyright. It does NOT give you any legal protection. It does… [cont.]
