How did the British public react to Indian Independence?
Q. Were British people upset because it was the end of 'empire'. Was there rioting in the streets? Or were British people happy for the Indians. Were there parties to celebrate independence. Was there guilt over the empire. Or was the British public in the UK indifferent to events happening in India

I was only seven years old in c1948 when India became independant. In my household there was great rejoycing mixed with sorrow. Rejoycing that India was at last free and sorrow that our hero Gandhi had not lived to see his dream fulfilled - an independant and Socialist India - the Jewel in the Crown. British supporters of the Americans during the revolutionary war?
Q. Where there a group of british supporters who wanted the Americans to win during the revolutionary war? Or something along the lines of that?
Asked by Tanya - Wed Jul 28 13:59:26 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Tanya, another interested group in seeing America "win" the war were British investors in the Colonies. This point doesn't get spoken much about but I will later attempt to dig through some information and attach it as a link here to this answer in order for it to be more concrete. Update: Tanya, I have attached a book that I read some years ago that I need to go through, but this is where I read of the British investors that had interests in seeing the Colonies win the war. I speculate that they may not have been opened about this in England (and elsewhere) but that they were very likely "quiet to themselves" about their financial interests. More to come on this topic. Asked by Sheffield-Politics - Fri Apr 10 20:41:49 2009 - - 12 Answers - 2 Comments

A. Some people just seem to believe that rules are made to be broken. People like that probably also enjoy a bit of a confrontation - it's a chance for them to feel powerful. So if I were you, I'd just ask them once nicely, "Excuse me, I have a reservation for this seat, would you mind awfully moving?" Then if they don't have the grace to move straightaway, just walk away, and perhaps look for a member of staff to deal with them. I assume these trains you're talking about are in England? If it's abroad you're talking about, I think it would be fair to assume that the British people concerned were just ignorant of the system - in Italy for instance, seat reservations aren't displayed on the seats, you have to occupy the seat specified on… [cont.]

Q. Why were the colonists (British Citizens) worried when the British Army (which had been protecting them for years) decided to take a little stroll in the country?
Asked by shiftless3spd - Thu Apr 16 22:42:55 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I believe some of it was related to a British plan to seize colonial firearms. The British knew that if the colonists had their guns taken away, they couldn't rebel against the British government. This was one of the major reasons the 2nd amendment was added.

How closely does the British media follow presidential elections in the United States?
Q. In the US, very few people know the names of the major British political parties, let alone the name of the Prime Minister unless you take the initiative to find out. Granted, elections in Great Britain have much shorter campaigning periods and thus less time to publicize, but I'm curious to find out how many people recognize the political happenings in the US outside of the War in Iraq. Also, do British citizens tend to vote strictly along party lines or does it vary candidate to candidate?

Why do british people react to criticism of BP with defensive anti-American rants?
Q. If you read the british press, it's loaded with hysteria over the alleged hysteria that is "sweeping across the US" regarding BP's oil spill. The tiniest criticism and the british react with such a defensive knee-jerk anti-Americanism, it's scary. In fact I was not anti-british because of the oil spill, but I am becoming anti-british because of their strange way of handling the slightest criticism.

A. Well I just saw an American woman interviewed in the affected area and she was demanding that the Queen of England come out and apologise. How much grovelling do you need to make you feel better? You just have to make people apologise again and again, even if it's nothing to do with them. Americans never make any mistakes, do they? (I won't start on about Bhopal again.) Suffice to say, BP is a company - it's not a country. The British people have nothing to do with it, and neither does the queen. The British people are badly affected too - just like the Americans. First we were hit by your lousy banks, and now we are hit by this company taking shortcuts too. So why bash the Brits? We've been hit in the pockets by both American and British… [cont.]

At what time did the British monarch become a figurehead?
Q. I know George III wasn't a figurehead, but Elizabeth II is. The British monarchs no longer have veto power, or any powers the monarch originally had for that matter. So when did the British monarch lose their power?
Asked by Nick J. - Sun Apr 26 16:14:52 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There have been a series of changes. The big change was actually before George III; it was William and Mary who came to power as a result of the Glorious Revolution of 1688, and became the first properly constitutional monarchs, doing away with divine right and agreeing a Bill of Rights. However, they still had significant power, and subsequent monarchs had different performances depending on their own presumptions of power versus those of Parliament and a changing society. Arguably George III & IV were a step back, as they presumed more power than they actually had and caused all sorts of problems by interfering in politics. They presided over a difficult period that saw large social changes as a result of growing trade and bourgeois… [cont.]

A. Guns Germs and Steel. Also, the Natives never learned to organize effective unity, they never saw the true threat of the British colonists. The colonists always stayed organized, and truly believed that they were settling lands ordained by God, that the million Native Americans didn't deserve a whole continent to themselves, and that they, Europeans, had the right to bring civilization to a dark continent

How could the British be more effective towards the epidemic of late blight in 1845 in Ireland?
Q. The british appealed the corn law but that was about the only thing that they did. What else could they have done to help the Irish and solve the problem?
Asked by Alex Wong - Sun Nov 8 19:58:37 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well during this time there was also a blight in England and the majority of farmers there were also eating potatoes as a staple in their diets. The problem did not become as big a problem in Britain as firstly there were not the same amount of poor tenant farmers (due to the plantations) and secondly the British continued to export all of the other food being grown in Ireland at the time. There was a huge amount of people being underfed and overworked and dying in the workhouses at the time and to avail of the "soup" people were forced to even change their names to further humiliate them so they were seen as a last resort for most irish people.

What are the British laws regarding selling items for charity?
Q. I am trying to think of different ways raise money for a certain charity. I had thought about making things to sell, but I'm uncertain about the British laws about this area. Can any one enlighten me, please?
Asked by Didi Coy - Mon May 19 03:47:23 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The best thing to do is to contact the charity you want to raise money for and ask them for advice. I did this last year and the charity in question sent me a letter verifying that I was raising money on their behalf. I was then able to show this letter to businesses etc that I was asking for money. I had to fill in forms saying what I was doing to raise the money, give them a date when I would be done etc. Another thing you can do is set up a page on justgiving.com to ask for donations to the specified charity but you can't sell items that way.
